There’s a lot of financial anxiety in the air right now. Groceries still feel ridiculously expensive, and with ongoing worries about the economy and job security, many of us are making the (not-so-fun) choice to stay in, tighten our budgets, and look for more affordable ways to connect. And honestly, as a mom, I constantly feel that twinge of guilt anytime I spend money on myself.
But here’s the thing — I need time with my girlfriends. It’s not just about fun (though that’s a big part of it). Spending time with friends helps reduce stress and anxiety, boosts my mood and confidence, and reminds me of who I am outside of motherhood. A Girls’ Night Out isn’t just a luxury — it’s a form of self-care that’s essential for my mental and emotional health.
And yes, even in this economy, a Girls’ Night Out (or afternoon) is totally possible. You just have to get a little creative while staying within your budget. Personally, I try to keep mine around $40 — any higher than that, and that pesky mom guilt starts to creep in.
Below, I’m sharing three of my favorite female-owned small businesses in the St. Louis area that host fun, social events — all for under $40 per person!
Keepsake STL
Keepsake began as a Fiber Arts club where people could mingle, learn new skills, and start friendships. It was so successful that Keepsake now operates as a storefront and workshop space on Cherokee Street. Keepsake is a small, female-owned business, and it is evident that its founder, Carla, is passionate about community, the arts, and supporting creators, artisans, and other small businesses in the area!
I signed up for a “Witchy Jewelry Making Party” in October (part of their DIY Gift Series) and plan on going to the “Holiday Block Printing Garland” (part of their DIY Decor Series) at the end of this month!

Willow’s Locket – Wentzville
Willow’s Locket is a charming social house and event venue located in Wentzville. Its founder and owner, Angie, is a fellow mom with more than 20 years of experience in creating, planning, and hosting events. From elegant galas and weddings to cozy, intimate gatherings, she’s done it all—and her passion and attention to detail shine through in every aspect of her work.
In October, my friend Mary and I attended one of her social nights at the venue, and we had so much fun. Angie clearly values community and connection, creating an inviting atmosphere where guests can relax, mingle, and enjoy delicious drinks and small bites. The highlight of the evening was making our own soap—Angie provided all the materials and guided us through the process. I love a good craft, especially one that’s simple, fun, and actually useful! I had such a wonderful time that I’m already planning to attend her upcoming “Sugar Scrubs and Sangria” night later this month.

Limefish Studio – all over St. Charles County
Limefish Studio is a small business based in St. Charles County. Its owner and creator, Danielle, is a mom, artist, art teacher, and book lover all rolled into one. In addition to offering art classes and lessons for kids and families, she also hosts 21+ “Paint and Sip” events that are both affordable (under $30!) and beginner-friendly. All supplies are provided, and Danielle guides you through each step with patience and encouragement. When she says “no artistic talent required,” she truly means it!
A few weeks ago, she helped me turn an ordinary brick into an adorable piece of garden décor that looks like a book — I am not artistic at all, but I’m actually proud of how it turned out! I also love that she’s passionate about supporting other local small businesses, often partnering with Double Dog Bookshop (a mom-owned mobile bookshop that also hosts book clubs) and Good News Brewing Company (a local brewery with locations in St. Charles County, Wildwood, and Alton, IL).
I had such a fun time at my first Limefish Studio event back in September, that I’ve already signed up for her next “Paint and Sip” in early December!
