Several years ago, when my husband and I were starting to grow our family, we moved to University City and quickly fell in love with the vibe. U City, as the locals say, is one of those places that doesn’t try too hard to be cool … because it already is. It’s laid-back, shaded by beautiful trees, full of personality, and has some of the most unique homes in the St. Louis area. It somehow feels both timeless and also quietly evolving.
It’s a walkable, stroller-friendly area where Saturday mornings often mean bumping into neighbors at a coffee shop and where parks are always within walking distance.
So, if you’re planning a little day trip with kids in tow – or just want a local neighborhood adventure – here’s how I’d recommend spending a day in U City.
Start With Coffee + Something Delicious
There’s no shortage of great coffee in U City, and yes, I’ve taste-tested my way through all of them (for research purposes, of course). Here are my top three picks.
- Winslow’s Table – This place feels like a neighborhood hug with amazing food. They have little coloring sheets for the kids too, which come in handy when you need to finish your latte in peace.
- The Press – This is a newer coffee shop that’s already a neighborhood staple. Located right off Delmar, it’s tucked away with a bright, airy vibe. It has a play corner for littles which is clutch if you have kids with you.
- Blueprint Coffee – For a St. Louis coffee staple, walk down Delmar and stop in Blueprint. Their coffee game is strong, and the pastries are always fresh.
Play Time at the Parks
Bring your stroller and snacks and stop by some of U City’s most loved parks.
- Lewis Park – A neighborhood gem tucked into a quiet residential area. It has a pond with a pretty walking path.
- Mooney Park – This park is famous for their firetruck with a slide that kids love. There is also a lot of green space to roam.
- Flynn Park – In this park you’ll find tennis courts, benches, and a playground that suits a variety of ages.
Lunchtime Favorites (Or Dinner if You’re Making a Day of It)
- Taco Buddha – This is our personal favorite U City spot! It has plenty of outdoor seating, and tacos that feel both elevated, yet chill. Their breakfast taco is worth a mention, too (only available on the weekends!).
- Dewey’s Pizza – Always a win with kids. There’s a big window where kids can watch the dough get tossed.
- Diego’s – This U City favorite serves up elevated Mexican food with a very hip atmosphere.
- Blueberry Hill – If you want that St. Louis nostalgia moment. This is located in the heart of the Loop. It’s an iconic spot that is fun for families. Burgers, games, and plenty of character.
Grabbing a cocktail while you’re here?
- Bonito Bar – Small, stylish, and a bit of a hidden gem. Their cocktails are fun, and it’s the perfect stop if you’re having a mom’s night or sneaking in a date!
My final tip
Don’t skip the neighborhoods. U City has the kind of blocks that beg to be walked. The sidewalks are lined with hundred-year-old homes, kids playing outside, and friendly neighbors. Bring the stroller, bring the snacks, and build in time to just … wander. That’s where the real magic is.
