Building Skills Brick by Brick: Celebrating National LEGO Day

Happy National LEGO Day!

Today, we’re celebrating one of childhood’s most beloved toys and one of the most powerful tools for development. LEGO bricks aren’t just fun; they help build essential skills that support speech, language, motor development, and learning in meaningful ways.

More Than Just Play

When children stack, snap, and separate LEGO bricks, they’re strengthening fine motor skills and hand strength, foundational abilities for writing, play skills, and overall coordination. Those tiny finger movements matter more than we realize!

Supporting Speech & Language Development:

LEGO play naturally encourages communication. As children build, they practice:

  •  Expressive language (“I need the red one!”)
  •  Receptive language (following directions or visual models)
  •  Turn-taking and social interaction during shared play
  •  Storytelling and sequencing as they create worlds and characters

Try narrating your child’s play or asking open-ended questions like, “What are you building?” or “Who lives here?”

Problem-Solving & Executive Function

Planning a structure, adjusting when it falls, and trying again all support executive functioning skills such as attention, flexibility, and persistence. These skills play an important role in school readiness and daily routines.

Sensory & Motor Benefits

LEGO activities provide valuable sensory input through touch and resistance. For younger children, supervised play with larger LEGO or DUPLO bricks can support body awareness, coordination, and motor planning.

How to Make LEGO Play Even More Beneficial

Here are a few simple ways to enhance development during LEGO time:

  •  Build while sitting at a table to encourage good posture
  •  Model descriptive language (colors, sizes, locations)
  •  Encourage bilateral hand use (one hand stabilizes, one builds)
  •  Create themed builds (farm, house, space station) to expand vocabulary

Play Is Powerful

Play is one of the most natural ways children learn. On National LEGO Day, we celebrate the joy of building brick by brick, skill by skill, and moment by moment.
