Finding Safe Comfort Food in St. Louis: Our Allergy-Aware Favorites Winter Edition

Finding comfort food when you’re dealing with food allergies can feel …not very comforting at all. When you just want something warm, filling, and familiar, but you also need to be safe, eating out can get stressful fast. As a mom in the St. Louis area navigating allergy-friendly options, I know how hard it can be to find places that feel both cozy and trustworthy. So I put together a list of local comfort foods and spots around STL that offer allergy-friendly options— because everyone deserves food without the worry!

While it’s always important to communicate directly with restaurants about specific allergies, these places are accommodating and transparent. Always speak directly to the place to ensure the safest eating environment for your party.

1025 Washington Ave, St.Louis MO 63101
3150 Grand Blvd, St.Louis MO 63118

Rooster is a super popular St.Louis brunch spot, and while they don’t have a formal allergy menu posted, they are known for being accommodating if you talk with your server. They offer vegan and vegetarian options, and some locations can make gluten-free swaps (like gluten-free crepes). They can also swap eggs if you have an egg allergy. Like most breakfast places cross contamination is high with egg allergy. Our current allergy favorite meal is the rooster slinger but replacing eggs with vegan tofu eggs. Everyone is so accommodating with our peanut and egg allergy there.

Food With Yoo

Located at Tower Grove Park all markets

Food With Yoo is a local favorite at the Tower Grove Farmers Market. They are known for serving up Korean street eats like hotteok— think of this as a stuffed pancake and Korean fried chicken wings. Because they currently operate at markets there is no published allergy menu. However, the hotteok is egg free, they offer many different flavors that are vegan, dairy-free and nut-free. The Korean fried chicken is also egg free and gluten free if you get it without the yangnyeom sauce. My daughter’s current favorite is the “Dave” Hotteok. It’s a warm Korean stuffed pancake with cream cheese and cinnamon sugar along with the original fried chicken wings.

Navigating Food Allergies in restaurants

Here’s a mom-approved, quick guide to make allergy-friendly outings easier!

1. Call Ahead

Before you go, call the restaurant and ask about allergen options. Many places don’t list allergens on their menu online, but staff are usually happy to help. Mention exactly what your child is allergic to — whether it’s dairy, eggs, nuts, soy, gluten, or multiple items — so they can recommend safe options.

2. Ask Questions at the Table

Once you’re seated, remind your server about the allergies and ask about:

  • Cross-contact (shared fryers, prep surfaces)
  • Ingredients in sauces, dressings, or toppings
  • Safe substitutions for sides or menu items
3. Bring an Allergy Card

A simple card listing your child’s allergens can be a lifesaver — especially if you’re visiting a busy spot or a new server. It quickly communicates what to avoid without repeated explanations.

4. Choose Flexible & Customizable Spots

Restaurants with build-your-own menus or lots of veggie/seasonal options are ideal. Places like Stacked STL, Polite Society, or Peel Wood Fired Pizza make it easy to swap ingredients and avoid allergens.

5. Be Prepared, But Keep It Fun

Even with planning, some surprises happen. Bring a safe snack or treat just in case, and remember: dining out should be a fun experience for the family! Focus on spots with friendly, allergy-aware staff and a relaxed atmosphere.

6. Use Online Resources

Websites and apps like AllergyEats, Find Me Gluten-Free, or local parenting groups can help you discover restaurants that are known for being allergy-conscious.
