Mom’s Guide to Formals: Prom, Homecoming, and Beyond!

Prom season is here! If you’re on the hunt for the perfect dress or a snazzy suit, there are so many local options! Don’t forget about flowers, and photo destinations.

Oh! And make sure your student buys the ticket at school before the deadline!

Be sure to let us know of any locations we missed!

Prom season is here, and most high schoolers do not have a formal gown or a snazzy suit in their closets. To make shopping easier, we have put together this local guide! You will find a very wide range in both price and quality when it comes to formal wear. Boutiques carry the heftier price tags, but also offer dresses that are made of higher quality materials.

Many boutiques limit how many dresses they carry in a particular style so that you’re less likely to see someone else wearing the same dress. If that matters to you, mall shops can’t make that guarantee.

Personally, we have found many formal dresses at Macy’s and with coupons have gotten beautiful dresses without breaking the bank.

Pro tip: Bring a strapless bra and heels to try on dresses. If you buy a dress with the intention of getting it altered, buy it early as spring is a busy time for alteration shops.

Windsor

39 West County Center Dr #1115, Des Peres, MO 63131
1155 St. Louis Galleria #2400, St. Louis, MO 63117
1600 Mid Rivers Mall #1238, St. Peter, MO 63376
134 St. Clair Square, Fairview Heights, IL 62208

At Windsor, you’ll find a selection of trendy dresses at a reasonable price. It is a popular option for prom dress shopping. Quality is mid-range. Windsor dresses tend to run a little small, and they do not carry much in the way of plus sizes. Many of their dresses stop at Large, though you can find Extra Large in some styles. Windsor considers Extra Large to be “Plus Size” which is sizes 14 and 15.

Camille La Vie

8 W County Center #1020, Des Peres, MO 63131

Camille La Vie is a major shopping destination for prom dresses, homecoming dresses, wedding dresses, and dresses for all party events.

Camille La Vie tends to be just a bit pricier than Windsor. Size-wise, this store does have a Plus Size selection, which includes sizes 14 – 20.

2 Mid Rivers Mall, St. Peters, MO 63376

The Dillard’s Clearance Center website has a tab just for prom dresses if you want to shop online, or go in person to the store. Pricing is on par with Macy’s, with many dresses under $200.

JC Penney

Some JC Penney locations are stand-alone stores, not inside of a mall

100 S County Center Way, St. Louis, MO 63129

150 Homer M Adams Pkwy, Alton, IL 62002
4 Mid Rivers Mall, St. Peters, MO 63376
7939 State Rte N, Dardenne Prairie, MO 63368

JC Penney is a good place to find pretty dresses and reasonable pricing! You can buy in-store or order online.

Macy’s

2 W. County Center, Des Peres, MO 63131
1550 St. Louis Galleria, Richmond Heights, MO 63117

200 St. Clair Square, Fairview Heights, IL 62208

We have always had the best luck at Macy’s. They have a wide range of prices and sizes. You can also order from them online. And always check online for coupons – I was able to get 25% off my daughter’s dress this year!

Nordstrom

47 W. County Center, Des Peres, MO 63131

Nordstrom is definitely on the higher price scale, but the quality shows. Their dresses don’t feel like a one-and-done, they feel like they could be worn over and over.

When it comes to ordering flowers for proms, homecomings, and other special events, be sure to order early. Two weeks before the event should be enough time. Many florists offer online ordering, however if you are hoping to match the color of a dress / tie, going in person is recommended.

If you pick your flowers up early, be sure to keep them in the refrigerator until you need them to keep them fresh.

Meeting for photos before a dance has become a family affair … moms and dads gathering to snap pics at a nearby park or landmark. It has become almost as much of a social event for parents as it is for our kids.
Pro Tip: If your kids are wearing heels / dress shoes to prom, have them bring tennis shoes to their outdoor photo sessions. Some of the prettiest spots involve a bit of a walk.
Encourage your kids to choose two different photo locations that are relatively close to each other before a school formal. There is a good chance the first spot you choose is also the spot everyone else chose, as well. It’s nice to have another option in case of crowds or even if you just want a variety of photos at different places. Also, choose an indoor option ahead of time in case of rain to avoid last minute scrambling! (note for any indoor photos, call ahead to find out their hours)

St. Louis City

This building is gorgeous, inside and out! Casual photos are allowed indoors, any professional shoots need to have a form request filled out ahead of time. Photos are permitted at the second floor atrium, the big staircase in the Olive Street Foyer (beautiful architecture) and the Great Hall.

For inside photos, call ahead on the day of photos to let them know you plan to come, in case a wedding is already coming that day.

It is colorful, edgy, and the murals are frequently changing.

Carol Kerber
Carol is married with four kids, who range in age from 10 to 20-years-old. She moved to St. Louis when she was 12, and except for four years living in Southern California as a newlywed, she’s lived here since. As a Mizzou graduate, Carol began her post-college career in publishing, and then switched gears to teach early elementary. Since having kids, she has been lucky enough to stay home with them. The Kerbers call Castlewood Stables in Ballwin their home, and all of their neighbors run around on four legs. While this lifestyle seems a bit foreign to her nature, being part of the STL Mom team is just the opposite. Carol has always loved to write but had never really given that dream wings until now. Being part of the St. Louis Mom team fulfills both the editor and writer in her spirit, and she gets to write about what she knows best: being a mom.
