Mom’s Guide to Performing Arts in St. Louis

Childhood: an ✨enchanting✨ time where imagination and expression blend seamlessly. One day you’ll catch your child belting out a song in the driveway for all the neighborhood to hear, and the next, you’ll watch as they shyly twirl across the kitchen to their favorite song. You’ll have front row seats to their pirate adventures and stuffed animal safaris.

When it’s time to fuel their passions, where do you go for enrichment?

From 🎨 Art to 🩰Dance, 🎶Music to 🎭Theater … we have crafted a guide full of lessons and classes for performing arts in St. Louis. Everything your little star needs to shine!

Presented by COCA

For over 40 years, COCA (Center of Creative Arts) has been St. Louis’s home for young performers and artists of every age and skill level. Year-round, COCA offers classes in dance, theatre, voice, and art & design, plus early childhood programs for ages 4 and up – all taught by professional Teaching Artists in a warm, inclusive studio community. Beyond weekly classes, families can dive into summer camps and intensives, pre-professional dance and theatre tracks, and mainstage productions and gallery exhibitions that let students perform and showcase real work.

This fall, COCA’s class catalog is bigger than ever: hundreds of options across its newly expanded campus, with in-person, virtual, and hybrid formats to fit any family’s schedule. Choose a single semester, a 7-week intensive, or a full Fall/Winter-Spring track (scholarships are available so cost is never a barrier). Whether your child is taking their first tap class or prepping for the spotlight, fall registration is open now!

This is done by examining great works of art, discussing the important elements in them, and applying those elements to the student’s own projects. We host two artist receptions each school year, providing students with the opportunity to curate, showcase, and discuss their artwork in a professional setting, while sharing their creative achievements with the broader community.

St. Louis Children’s Choirs

2842 N Ballas Rd, St. Louis, MO 63131

(314) 993-9626 | [email protected]

Monday – Thursday 10 am – 5 pm | Friday: by appointment

The St. Louis Children’s Choirs trains interested young singers within six progressive ensembles, offering a challenging and age-appropriate choral experience. The majority of our choirs rehearse once a week from late August through May, with Concert Choir rehearsing twice a week. Beginning Music Makers rehearse for 45 minutes, intermediate levels for 90 minutes, and advanced choirs for two hours. Ensembles meet in small sections at different locations and times in West County and University City.

Students sing both classical and contemporary music written by master composers. Performing music that includes a variety of styles — jazz and gospel, sacred and secular, folk music and Mozart, — students grow in a choral setting where they are respected as young artists and perform with professional musicians. All ensembles of the Children’s Choirs sing at Powell Symphony Hall each December. Advanced choirs tour nationally and internationally and perform as the official children’s choir of the St. Louis Symphony.

Our commitment to high standards and quality instruction motivates students to strive for excellence and reach their performance goals. In addition to building strong theatrical and performance abilities, students cultivate valuable life skills along the way. They gain pride in their accomplishments while receiving the focus, structure, and creative outlet they need through musical theatre, acting, or technical theatre. By encouraging teamwork and offering support, we foster a positive environment where students uplift one another. Self-confidence flourishes as they present themselves not only on stage, but in everyday life. From the beginning to the completion of each production, students learn preparation, responsibility, focus, active listening, observation, and critical thinking.
