Guide Instructions
Welcome to our New Mom to St. Louis Guide! This Guide was created BY local moms FOR local moms in the hopes of making St. Louis a bit easier to navigate when moving here. The information gathered here was created from many of the questions we repeatedly receive from our followers. Hover over the map image below to highlight the St. Louis region you’re looking to explore. From there, click to learn more about the metro location including information about what it’s like to live in that area, transportation, walkability, school systems, childcare, pediatricians, parks and playgrounds, indoor play spaces, and more!
It is nearly impossible to divide our metropolitan into 7 individual metro areas, accounting for nearly 3 million people, so please know that map lines, defined metro areas, and communities included are estimates and done so to share resources requested by our readership and real recommendations from St. Louis moms in the hopes you’ll explore neighboring regions, too.
Insider Insight into St. Louis Living
Gooey Butter Cake – there’s a whole host of reasons gooey butter cake is a popular novelty in St. Louis, but it mainly dates back to a story coming from the 1930s Depression era and a baking mishap. The rest is history! Our favorite spot to find Gooey Butter Cake is at Russell’s!
Toasted Ravioli – another historic recipe that dates back to the 40’s and a drunken mistake when a ravioli was knocked into a grease fryer, and ta-da toasted ravioli was born! Most people love it, but you should at least try it once!
Provel “Cheese” – the mystery to us all and the shining star of Imo’s Pizza. It’s certainly an experience!
Highway 40 (aka Interstate 64) – spend any amount of time in St. Louis, and you’ll hear references to highway 40 from the locals. Transplants know it as Interstate 64 but those who grew up here know it as highway 40. It doesn’t really matter, but don’t let that confuse! They are one in the same.
Jokes on Halloween – Apparently this is unique to St. Louis but as natives we wouldn’t know the difference! It’s common practice for a child to be asked if they have a joke to tell in exchange for a piece of candy when they make their rounds trick or treating on Halloween night!
Fish Fries – Every year during the Lenten season, a host of Catholic churches in the region host fish fry events on Friday evening! Fried fish, tasty sides, sit down and drive thru. The options are endless!
Where’d You Go to High School – Natives and transplants alike will hear this question unique to STL! It’s hard to explain why, but those who are familiar with the region might use this question to determine your socioeconomic status growing up (public vs. private school, etc) or just to inquire about where you spent most of your time growing up.

“Seven years ago, my husband received a job offer, which took us from NYC to St. Louis. We explored the city as singles, married, and had our first child in 2018. Technically, I wasn’t “new” to STL when I became a mom, but I never explored with “mom goggles” on or had any local friends or family with children. Instead, I focused on my career and making new friends. And then, BAM, I was a mom! I wished for a one-stop-shop guide for a new mom in a new city as I transitioned into motherhood, as there is so much STL has to offer moms and their little ones. I am excited to play a small part in bringing this much-needed resource to life!”
