Adoption, One Year Later: A Reflection on Adding to our Family

Fostering and adoption can bless your life in the sweetest ways. Aimee shares her experiences when she and her husband adopted little Mya.

It still feels so surreal to me that I am a mom. I never envisioned I would be a parent. I love kids, but always said I’d never have any of my own. That changed when I met my husband. I realized I did want to add to our family, but having a biological child wasn’t going to happen. We were going through the process of fostering classes through the state so that we could foster and eventually adopt. Before we finished our classes, baby Mya came along from a relative, and we decided to foster her.

The word adoption written in multicolor letters on a pink heart, with a soft blue background. In a whirlwind, we became instant parents. From that day on, I knew what absolute love was. We fostered her for one year and one month before she officially became adopted. That is one year and one month of fear that I would eventually lose her and not be her mommy anymore. I still tear up thinking about that time and what could have been.

As I look back one year later from her adoption, it’s amazing how different our lives are. Our daughter is thriving. She is so smart, polite, and loves with all her heart. She is my sassy girl who loves her little friends, cuddles, and everything about animals. She has changed how I look at my husband. I now get to experience him in a completely different way. Seeing him interact with her, how he cares for her, and teaches her just melts my heart. He loves her so much, and I am so thankful that I get to witness their relationship and be a part of it.

I used to have a pretty hard outlook on life. Very matter of fact, I guess you could say. I didn’t take crap from people and was cold at times to keep myself protected. She has absolutely changed that. I now see endless opportunities and only want her to see the good things in life. The love for my daughter is nothing I have ever experienced before, and I am thankful every day that I get to be her mommy. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next year, but I don’t want to rush it. In a blink, she is already 2-years-old, and I can still remember the day I first held her. It goes by so fast, so I will just soak up every kiss, cuddle, and ‘I love you’ that I can!
