How I Found My Mom-unity (Mom + Community) by Simply Showing Up

How can you build a community of moms?

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about finding a support system as a mom (and honestly, as a human), it’s this: you have to put yourself out there first. Not every group will be the right fit, and that’s okay. Some people you meet will stay acquaintances, while others will become lifelong friends. But you won’t know unless you go.

The key? Start with what excites you. Think about your interests—because I guarantee there’s a local community, club, or group for that.

📚 Love reading? There’s a book club near you.
🌿 Obsessed with plants? Plant swap groups exist!
🏓 Want to get moving? Pickleball is everywhere right now.
👩‍💻 Mompreneur? Business networking groups like the Mom-Owned Business Group in Eureka can be game-changers.
🚗 Into niche hobbies? There are even Disney Cars collector groups (ask me how I know 😆).

“But I’m an Introvert…”

I hear you. The idea of walking into a room full of strangers or putting yourself out there might feel overwhelming. Here’s my advice:

🔹 Start small – A low-key book club or a casual coffee meet-up might feel more comfortable than a big networking event.
🔹 Find online groups first – Engage in conversations before committing to an in-person meet-up.
🔹 Bring a friend – Having a familiar face can ease the pressure of being in a new setting.
🔹 Give yourself an out – Tell yourself you’ll stay for 30 minutes, and if you’re enjoying it, great! If not, you tried. No harm, no foul.
🔹 Remember: most people feel the same way – You’re not the only one nervous about making new connections.

For me, showing up to events, networking groups, and even just chatting with other moms at drop-off has led to some of the best connections. Some felt like my people instantly, while others weren’t the right fit—and that’s part of the process.

But it all starts with taking that first step. Find what makes you excited, and then find others who share that passion. That’s where real, lasting community happens.

So tell me—what’s a hobby or interest of yours? I bet there’s a group for that.
