Things to Consider
Before Signing Up for Field Hockey
- Field hockey is a very physical sport. Skills that will enhance your ability to play well are: endurance, speed, and strength.
- Choosing the right stick is important. In general, a field hockey stick should come up to the player’s hip. Sticks vary in weight- a lighter stick makes quick movements easier, a heavier stick is more durable and adds power to your hits.
- In addition to a stick, players will need protective gear, including: a well-fitted mouthguard, shin guards, and cleats. Some players wear gloves to protect their fingers and hands. If you’re a goalie, more padding is necessary, such as a face mask, gloves, chest pads, and leg guards.
- Practice at home – stick and ball skills are easy to practice in the yard, especially with a set of cones.
- Field hockey is a sport that many are introduced to in middle school and high school. Encourage your child to give it a try, even if they aren’t as familiar with the sport.
