What: Larger than London in AD1250, Cahokia Mounds was the center of the prehistoric Mississippian culture. With more than 100 mounds, four trails, and lots of history chances are you’ll go back – we do.
First Stop: If you’re up for the challenge, take the 154-step climb to the top of Monks Mound. At 10 stories tall (or three school buses), it is the largest, man-made earthen mound in North America. Once you get your breath at the top, stop for a snack break as you look westward at the Gateway Arch.

- Bring water. We didn’t notice any drinking fountains!
- There is a darling playground in Kiener Plaza that has a great swing and climbing structure. (and it’s gated!).

The Jewel Box is another Forest Park treasure you just can’t miss. This glass display greenhouse is nestled in the heart of the park. Admission is typically $1 per person, but it is free on Monday and Tuesday from 9 am until noon. There are special floral shows at Christmas, early spring, Easter, Mother’s Day, summer and fall. It has tropical trees, foliage plants, flowers, a new water feature and fountain year round. It feels nice and warm here on a cold winter day in St. Louis! So when you’re in Forest Park at the Science Center, Zoo, or Nature Playscape, carve out some time to see this local gem!

For your motorcycle lovers, the MOTO Museum, located in the Midtown Moto Complex, houses a private collection of unique motorcycles obtained from over 20 countries from around the globe covering almost 100 years of motorcycle history. The museum is a celebration of the form, function, evolution, and elegance of the motorcycle.
Admission is free, however call ahead before visiting to ensure they aren’t closed for a private event.

The Muny, one of Forest Park’s not-so-hidden gems, kicked off its 106th season this month. As the largest outdoor theater in the country, summers are a bit more magical when you spend an evening or two soaking in the sights and sounds of Broadway right here in St. Louis. The theater itself seats over 11,000 guests, and each and every night, over 1400 tickets are set aside as “free seats” in the last nine rows of the theater.
Every summer includes a show especially for little ones! This summer, The Muny will perform The Little Mermaid.
To claim free seats, just get there early! Gates open at the back of the theater in Lichtenstein Plaza at 7 pm, and tickets are given on a first-come, first-served basis. Plan to arrive around 6 pm or earlier to get a spot in line! You can pack a picnic to enjoy in line while you wait. Here is the Muny list of items you can bring into the theater:
- Outside food and drink
- Soft-sided coolers (must be able to fit under your seat)
- Hard-sided coolers (allowed in preshow areas, NOT in the theater, so you would need to run it back to your car before entering).
- Outside alcohol is permitted outside of the theater.

Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center is an educational nature oasis in the middle of Kirkwood. It is nestled within 112 acres of oak hickory forest in a quiet corner of a busy urban world. The area has three trails, all of them paved, and one that offers interpretive signage and is disabled accessible. Powder Valley has something for nature lovers both indoors and out, and for all seasons.

This isn’t a particular venue to visit, it’s more of an STL area activity. Spend some of your summer days painting rocks with your kids! You can customize them any way you’d like, or paint some to represent different venues around the STL area that you plan to visit. As you are out and about this summer, bring some of your rocks and “hide” them at the different venues! You can paint rocks with Little Mermaid characters to hide around The Muny or rocks with various wild animals before you head out to the zoo.
